ADVANCED Short Courses assume a basic experience level and investigates the theoretical background of various complex modeling techniques.

Advanced Short Courses may be customized based upon existing courses from the list below, or specific customized training may be requested on a topic from a specialized area.

Training materials and temporary copies of software are provided for all course participants.

Freeze / Thaw Cycle in Modeling One day Review of the principles and practices typically used in conductive & convection modeling. Application of the modeling principles to real-world models such as thermosyphon performances, freezing beneath roads, mine stope groundwater interactions
Advances in Probabilistic Slope Stability Analysis and Coupled Climatic F.E. Modeling One day This course covers advances in both the theoretical and practical application of probability theory to slope stability and seepage geotechnical problems. Case studies will also be examined which illustrate the complexity of back-analysis of classic slides such as the Lodalen slide by both 2D and 3D slope stability numerical methods. Application of statistical principles to seepage analysis will also be covered.
Slope Stability and Seepage Modeling of Mine Tailings and Waste Rock One day This course covers advances in both the theoretical and practical application of probability theory to slope stability and seepage geotechnical problems. Special focus will be paid to creating numerical models of tailings and waste rock facilities. Case studies will also be examined which illustrate the complexity of back-analysis of classic slides such as the Lodalen slide by both 2D and 3D slope stability numerical methods. Application of statistical principles to seepage analysis will also be covered.
New Numerical Modeling Aspects of the Long-Term Modeling of Mine Tailings and Waste Rock One day Numerical modeling has established itself as a useful tool both in the operations as well as closure of mining facilities. Such numerical models are part of the design of tailings facilities as well as the predictions of their long-term performance. Special attention will be placed on setting up of coupled thermal and flow models such that the aspects of modeling in a northern climate can be examined. The modeling of 3D aspects of tailings water balance models will be discussed in detail. Slope stability topics will focus on climatic influences of slope stability and their modeling. Several methodologies and their application will be presented. A methodology for optimizing tailings dam designs through the batch run of many slope stability models will be examined. The course is focused on the concepts of acceptable methodologies for consultants, regulators, and mining companies for the setting up and completion of numerical models. The concepts presented are independent of specific software packages. The focus will be on acceptable methodologies and model interpretation.
Slope Stability Analysis One or Two days This course will cover the fundamental principles of 2-D slope stability analysis. The methodology will then be expanded to 3-D analysis using the Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM). A practical method of the proper consideration of both 2-D and 3-D design factors of safety (FOS) will be considered. Setup and analysis of typical 2-D and 3-D numerical models will be covered. Extensions to the short course can cover combined groundwater seepage analysis, climatic analysis, and conceptual model design of complex 3-D numerical models.
Consolidation Modeling One day Review of the principles and practices typically used in settlement & consolidation analysis. This includes a review of stress & groundwater methodology, as well as small and large strain consolidation.
Groundwater Flow One day Review of the principles and practices typically used in groundwater flow modeling. Application of the modeling principles to real-world models such as 2D and 3D earth dams / levees.
