Public Beta Release of
SVOFFICE™5: SVDESIGNER™ - 3D Conceptual Modeling and Visualization Software for Geotechnical Engineers

This completely new software product introduces a powerful new geometry construction/excavations and manipulation tool to the SVOFFICE™ Suite.

The beta release of SVDESIGNER™ is the third beta release of a package from the new SVOFFICE™5 suite of geotechnical and geoenvironmental software products. A major piece of the concept-to-solution workflow has been missing in the geotechnical design process…until now. SVDESIGNER™ is here to fill that need. Historically it has been very difficult to conceptualize and dynamically create representations of complex geostrata, roads, embankments or tailings dams in 3D space. Using an easy-to-use set of tools, the user can then quickly prototype and visualize the planned construction or excavation sequences or generate site flyover animations. Advanced features in the software handle intersections of various surfaces so the 3D geometry can be represented accurately. Volumes can be calculated and the 2D or 3D representations of geometry can be moved into any of the SVOFFICE™5 numerical modeling modules for advanced analysis.

SVDESIGNER™ represents a new paradigm for geotechnical design in that the full three-dimensional site geometry is represented. Subsequent 2D or 3D numerical modeling activities can be initiated based on professional judgment of the project engineer. Overall design and prototyping time is reduced in this system. The complexity of 3D numerical models that can be created in a short time frame is also improved.

We are providing a beta of SVDESIGNER™ for the purposes of gaining feedback from the growing number of users wishing to perform 3D analysis. The SVDESIGNER™ software contains a robust feature set such as:

  • Construction Sequences: Sequences of layers or lifts of material as placed in earth dams or in mining operations can be easily represented in the 3D conceptual model.
  • Surface cuts and excavations: Cuts into topography can be easily performed as per the design of a road cut into the side of a hill. Mining cuts such as with open pits can also be represented.
  • Representation of Complex 3D Surfaces: 3D surfaces can be imported from a variety of formats and represented as grids or triangulated surfaces consisting of hundreds of thousands of individual polygons.
  • Volume calculations: Volumes of material can be calculated to aid in construction activities.
  • High-Performance Graphics Subsystem: The entire SVOFFICE™5 suite benefits from our newly developed 3D CAD graphics subsystem.
  • High fidelity contouring: For both elevations and thickness parameters.
  • Stunning Visuals: High fidelity 3D conceptual designs can be captured for display to clients and review of potential designs.
  • Easy-to-use User Interface: Featuring a familiar user interface with easy to understand icons and functions. The software tools behave exactly how you would expect with a short learning curve. You will be able to start modeling right away.
  • New SVOFFICE™5 Manager: the project manager dialog has been redesigned to greatly simplify its usage. Models can easily be grouped by project and stored anywhere on the users disk drive.

SVDESIGNER™ takes 3D modeling to a whole new level and it will continue to evolve and strengthen based on close interaction with our customers. We would welcome you to review our work with the beta version.

SoilVision International Short Course Series 2015

Murray D. Fredlund, Ph.D., PEng, President/CEO, SoilVision Systems Ltd. will be presenting a pre-Congress short course (PC03 on the conference registration) on November 15th, 2015 in Buenos Aires, Argentina at the 15th Pan-American Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.

This course will present advanced topics related to both 2D and 3D slope stability analysis areas. The focus will be on aspects of a correct numerical analysis of slopes by the limit equilibrium methodology. The management of complex 3D spatial data will be discussed as well as modeling methodologies related to 3D numerical modeling. The focus will be on advanced concepts of slope stability analysis and their application. Applications of 3D solutions to real-world problems will be covered.

The course will also cover advances in the area of slope stability analysis in applying unsaturated principles to slope stability models. A combination of classic limit equilibrium as well as more advances stress-based numerical models will be covered in terms of their applicability to practical problems.

The benefits associated with performing 3D slope stability analyses were introduced in the 1970s. Over the years a number of 3D methods of analysis have been researched. These methods have ranged from the method of columns to approaches based on variational calculus, and more recently, the use of dynamic programming. Interest in 3D slope stability analysis appears to be driven by the fact that most slope stability failures are inherently three-dimensional in character. That is, the failure surface most often represents a variation on a dish-shaped surface. Two-dimensional representations are a significant simplification of the actual situation. It is somewhat surprising that geotechnical engineers have been as successful as they have been in using two-dimensional simplifications of three-dimensional geometries for slope stability studies.

Industry has largely embraced a two-dimensional approach with respect to slope stability analysis as an accepted method of practice and acceptable design factors of safety generally range between 1.3 and 1.5. The calibration to well-instrumented failures has typically involved performing 2D back-analyzing of failed slopes and accepting the results as a "reasonable calibration", even though the slope failed in a 3D manner.
