3D Optimization is a method for finding the lowest Factor of Safety (FOS) in a slope stability model. It optimizes the results found by the analysis search method by iteratively changing the slip surface to find the critical slip shape with the lowest FOS, considering both circular and non-circular shapes. This method is particularly useful when modeling heterogeneous material layers susceptible to non-circular/non-ellipsoidal slip shapes. More specifically, a modeler may be uncertain regarding how the varying material layers will affect the location and shape of the slip surface. 3D optimization will consider these material complexities, automatically adjusting the slip surface to find the critical slip. It is an effective method of optimization that requires no additional inputs – simply selecting the optimization checkbox enables this powerful feature.
